Underground News: My interview with Jamie Sanders

I recently got a chance to interview Jamie Sanders, creator of Virtualnes.com and Virtualgbx.com and also part of the alliance known ans "The Emulation Collective" that creates Emulation websites that follow legal code. Meaning you can play games online without consequences.

UN: How did you get into emulation?

JS: I discovered emulation when I was 8, but it took several years, and attempts at writing other things, before I gave writing my own emulator a chance. I've always been the sort to want to know how things work, and the idea of recreating hardware in software was really appealing to me.

UN: Why did you choose to emulate in Java?

JS: I wanted to have a reliably way to play games using a web browser, and at the time, Java was really the natural choice. Flash just wasn't powerful enough at the time, and Silverlight didn't exist. Silverlight never panned out to be a good idea, and there's a lot of Flash backlash these days.

Of note, one thing I wanted to be rid of were terrible clones of (predominately) NES games in Flash that simply didn't capture the proper feeling and appeal that it does via emulation.

UN: Did you expect VNES and VGBX to get such a large a following?

JS: I'm not really sure if I expected this to be quite as large as it did, but I've met a lot of really cool and interesting people all over the world through this project, and I'm very thankful for that opportunity.

UN: What features can we expect for the coming weeks?

JS: Punch-Out!!, Zapper, and a few others that are still secret.

UN: With the announcement of VirtualSNES, what can be expected at launch?

JS: Somewhere over 100 games, and excellent sound support.

UN: Do you plan to just make emulators for the rest of your life, or do you hope to move on to bigger and better things?

JS: It's a hobby. I plan to do a lot of increasingly awesome things, but this is a hobby, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

UN: Do you plan to make an emulator for (insert video game system here)?

JS: Yes.

UN: More for my own curiosity, what is "We can dance. We can dance. Everybody's taking the chance."?

JS: It's a reference to a 1980's one-hit-wonder Men Without Hats, specifically their song "The Safety Dance".

Okay, when I talked about Matt & Kim, I said they might have the most original style I'd ever heard. I totally forgot about Flogging Molly. Okay, here's some math

Celtic Music+Punk Rock=GENIUS!!!

No, seriously though, Flogging Molly has a seriously unique sound. Now, to be fair, there are other bands in the genre, but I think Flogging Molly trumps all. They have lyrics that resound to anyone who has even the tiniest amount of Irish in them. These songs make me want to drink, read celtic literature, and then drink some more. Songs like "What's left of the flag" makes me one to start a rebellion or something. "Drunken Lullabies" makes me want to...well, not get drunk then sleep, if that's what your thinking. I don't really know how ton descripe these guys. Just listen to them!

Cuffs cut, deep to the bone

Now, I think me ranting about music is pretty regular now. So, I may as well bring some attention to Matt & Kim. Matt & Kim is a weird, keyboard, drum, dance, indie duo. They have catchy tunes, random lyrics, and great videos. Videos like running through New York Naked, then getting attacked by the cops, or Getting food thrown at them while playing, changing on camera, then being tackled by people dressed as food, or playing keyboard and drums in claustrophobic spaces in places which normally, not one of them should fit. But that is just videos, the music is the real deal. I can honestly say that Matt & Kim have one of the most original styles I have ever heard. Also, they are funny. Not to say that their songs are just 3 minute joke fests, but that in person, they are funny, relaxed, and generally cool. I say this, not from experience, but from the way they act on camera.
Matt & Kim are a great band and have already released 3 albums. I suggest you guy buy all of them. (captions) (1st: Matt & Kim playing in a fridge) (2nd: Matt being arrested for public nudity) (3rd: All I can say is, poor kid.) (4th: Food attacks! You cant see it, but the banana is tackling Kim, looks like the taco might be doing the running man.)

Nothing new on the 849's mind front, I lost Unreal. So, no more of that till I find it. I'm trying to work on a live action sitcom, but damned stuff keeps getting in my way. Well, short post, but that's pretty much it.
